One reason people love to collect and talk about watches is the technologies and features that go into making them. While the average collector is highly unlikely to ever use their watches to the fullest extent – especially dive watches – it’s always a neat bragging right. Speaking of dive watches, extreme depth ratings are part of the game, and right now one of the best is the new Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional. It sports an astonishing 6000m/20000ft depth rating and a massive case that has to be seen to be believed.

The original Ultra Deep concept watch featured a massive titanium case and fixed “manta” lugs. The whole package checked in at a massive 28mm thick and 55mm across. Though titanium is ultra-light, a watch of that size is just not practical for many people.

The new Ultra Deep is 45.5mm wide and far thinner at 18.12mm thick. It’s also available in a special steel alloy called “O-Megasteel” that is harder than 316L steel. Without it, the watch would not be able to maintain structural integrity and reach the amazing depth ratings it achieves.

Under the hood, there’s Omega’s 8912 movement that also runs the new Seamaster watches. Here’s it’s a time-only movement that offers a 60-hour power reserve. The Ultra Deep’s illuminated hands and hour markers are cleverly differentiated with different colored material for easier reading.
