PATEK PHILIPPE NAUTILUS 5712

When one talks about the world of high-end sport watches, it is impossible not to mention Patek Philippe Nautilus. The design comes straight from an era when dress watches were gold and thin, and the sport watches were a slight larger and bolder versions of the dress ones.

In the seventies Patek Philippe collaborated with the Gérald Genta to create a new sport luxury watch. This is how in 1976 Nautilus model has been born. The design was a radical departure from the traditional style of Patek’s existing range. The timepiece was much larger, had defining “ears” on both sides of the case, large octagonal bezel and bright black-blue dial and last but not least it was made out of stainless-steel rather than traditional gold. The case and the bracelet display a beautiful combination of hand-polishing together with matte satin finishes.

THE DIAL

The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712 in stainless steel is featuring a gorgeous black-blue dial with a very unique hue. Its siblings in 18K rose gold and 18K white gold, are fitted with a slate grey dial that is also gorgeous but not as strikingly beautiful as the one on this stainless steel model. Just like on all other Nautilus models, the dial features the horizontally embossed Nautilus pattern accentuated with ten applied luminous hour markers in 18K white gold. Dial has a very subtle gradient, that gives the watch a different face look depending on the light. It has three beautifully designed complications, even though there’s a lot going on on this dial, the layout is still relatively uncluttered and quite nice. At five o’clock there is a seconds indicator. Next to it, between six and eight o’clock is a moon phase indicator, which is a popular complication that has a rotating disc which indicates the position of the moon that is visible from earth. Between ten and eleven, there is a power-reserve sub-dial. Designers have done a good job fitting the various indicators and registers on the dial in a logical and balanced way.

THE BRACELET AND STRAP

Depending on the model, the Nautilus comes with leather strap or stainless-steel bracelet. With the leather strap Nautilus morphs into a classy dress watch, while with the stainless-steel bracelet it reminds everybody that it is a high-end sport watch. In both configurations it’s thin and sleek design will easily slip under most shirt-cuffs.
