If you’re still on the hunt for Christmas gifts, a watch could be your ticket. While some models are hard to get, Tudor’s watches are generally common and are regarded as upscale luxury timepieces. The Tudor Black Bay 58 925 in Sterling Silver is a great example of Tudor value and quality, so let’s take a closer look at what makes it tick.
The Black Bay line became popular because of the watches’ high quality and classic design. It doesn’t hurt that it’s so hard to find Rolex watches, either, as Tudor is literally the next best thing. The Tudor Black Bay 58 in Sterling Silver debuted earlier this year with a striking grey bezel and dial, retro-cool domed crystal, and a display caseback, which is not a common feature of watches in the Rolex family. The watch’s 39mm case is 12.7mm thick, which makes it slightly heftier than Black Bay models without an open caseback. That said, the watch won’t feel foreign to anyone who has worn a Black Bay in the past.Â
Silver is an interesting choice of metal for the watch, because it’s both softer and more expensive than steel. It’s not as desirable as white gold and it can tarnish, which makes for a unique Black Bay model. The upside is that silver’s luster and color are unique, which helps the watch stand out. Tudor offers the watch on a leather or fabric strap, and both options are comfortable for all-day wear.
Under the clear caseback beats Tudor’s MT5402 movement. It features a 70-hour power reserve and COSC certification. It’s a time-only movement, but reliable, and is backed by Tudor’s five-year warranty. There’s not much in the way of decoration or eye candy with the workhorse movement, but the display caseback still provides a neat way to observe what’s going on.
