REVIEW: PATEK PHILIPPE AQUANAUT 5167/1A
Since it’s foundation in 1852 Patek Philippe has been responsible for creating some of the most exquisite and complicated mechanical watches in the world. As a result timepieces in Patek Philippe’s collection are very expensive and mostly inaccessible to most watch collectors. The Aquanaut 5167 is priced at a lower end of Patek Phillppe’s universe, but it is still superior to many watch models from other luxury brands out there and is simply a great entry-level timepiece for collectors who may want to engage with the brand.
Aquanaut series is a very controversial with Patek purists, it’s simply doesn’t fit the traditional notion of a luxury timepiece. The Aquanaut draws heavily from the inspiration in the Genta-designed Nautilus series. From the porthole-inspired case, to the movement and date indicator, even to the somewhat similar hour markers and thick hands.
THE WATCH
The case of the 5167 Aquanaut has a relatively low profile, which makes it a very comfortable everyday casual watch to wear. The case features contrasting textures of satin and beautiful polish. Fitted with a screw-down crown the Aquanaut is water resistant to 120 meters, making it perfect for any type of water activities. The crown is signed with the Patek Philippe Calatrava cross. This timepiece is available in steel or rose gold, and with the option for either a metal bracelet or rubber strap.
The dial is a matte black, with curved checkerboard pattern which is reminding the latitude and longitudes lines of the globe. The luminescent paint is applied to hands, Arabic numerals and boxes at each hour mark. The Aquanaut features a square date indicator at the three o’clock.
An interesting feature in this series is the non-integrated bracelet with the watch, which seems very practical, the rubber strap is easy to clean and replace. At the end of the strap is a clasp that was designed with ultimate comfort in mind and its folding push system is second to none.
THE MOVEMENT
The beating heart inside the Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5167/1A-001 is the automatic calibre 324 S C composed of 213 parts, 29 jewels, six bridges and which provides a power reserve of 45 hours when fully wound while beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph.
