Summer is around the corner, and for many of us that means warm weather and outdoor fun. It can be hard to choose a watch for the season, though, because being outside and moving around makes bulky timepieces uncomfortable to wear in summer. We’ve researched the best choices in summer watches to find three models that will suit almost anyone. 

When looking for a good summer watch, we assess a few main characteristics. The watch’s size and weight are biggies, because hot weather makes heavy watches uncomfortable. The movement is important, as a long power reserve and date complication make for a more useful watch. Finally, we look for watches that work well on a variety of straps. Even if the bracelet is great, many will find that summer weather demands a lightweight strap. 

Tudor Pelagos FXD

The Pelagos FXD features fixed spring bars and a rugged diver design, all housed in lightweight titanium. Measuring 42mm, the watch comes with Tudor’s excellent MT5602 movement, which offers 70 hours of power reserve. Unlike the standard Pelagos, there’s no date function here, but purists will love the clean, uninterrupted blue dial. The watch’s unique spring bar design makes it fun to swap straps, and the 660-foot water resistance rating means you can take it anywhere without worry.

Breitling Chronomat

A few years ago, Breitling updated the Chronomat with a variety of fun dial colors and a new movement. The resulting timepiece is a solid but lighthearted chronograph with eye-catching features. The watch is powered by Breitling’s B01 movement, which offers a 70-hour power reserve, chronograph, and date functions. A new bracelet design showed up with the watch’s overhaul as well, and it’s one of the most distinctive we’ve seen.

Grand Seiko Diver

Grand Seiko knows how to make a diver, and the SBGA029 is a great showcase of its prowess. The massive 44mm stainless steel case houses the brand’s 9R65 movement, which offers a 72-hour power reserve. There’s a date, a ceramic bezel, and a wonderfully detailed dial with an intriguing three-dimensional texture. You can take the watch down to 660 feet, so there’s little water danger, and Grand Seiko’s bracelets are excellent.
