Patek Philippe is one of the oldest and most storied watchmakers in the world, and is one-third of the “Holy Trinity of Watches,” a group that also includes Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. One of Patek’s most iconic designs is no longer available, however, but it’s not a surprise. We’ve known – and Patek confirmed – that the legendary 5711 would be discontinued, but it’s now become a reality. The reference is no longer included on the Patek website, among all the other Nautilus models it inspired.
The 5711 was originally introduced as an update to the original Gerald Genta design for the Nautilus. It featured a 43mm case, a central seconds hand, and a tidy date window at 3 o’clock. The most recent designs for the reference don’t deviate from that formula to a high degree, though Patek has introduced unique dial colors in recent years. After it announced the watch’s discontinuation last year, the brand debuted a green dial 5711, and for its last hurrah, the watch got a special blue dial model. Patek sent the 5711 out in style with a Tiffany Blue model limited to just 170 pieces. One was auctioned for over $6.5 million, though most reside with celebrities and collectors.
So, what does this mean for the Nautilus? Well, not much, at least at first. The rest of the iconic line is still for sale and can still be purchased new. As for the 5711, it’s unlikely that Patek will let such a classic and attractive design die without a comeback tour. In the meantime, you can find the Nautilus and other Patek models right here.
